The plantation can be accessed via a gate on the town's main square, marked with the inscription "Hoyo de Monterrey. Jose Gener. 1960."

The word "Hoyo," meaning "hole," aptly describes the plantation’s low-lying position along the fertile banks of the San Juan y Martínez river. In 1865, José Gener, a Spaniard from Tarragona, used the name of his plantation to create a distinguished cigar brand that has become synonymous with excellence.
