Hoyo de Monterrey originates from the town of San Juan y Martínez, nestled in the heart of Cuba’s prestigious Vuelta Abajo region. The Hoyo de Monterrey plantation, one of the most revered Vegas de Primera, can be accessed through a gate on the town's main square, marked with the inscription “Hoyo de Monterrey. Jose Gener. 1860.”

The word “Hoyo,” meaning “hole,” aptly describes the plantation’s low-lying position along the fertile banks of the San Juan y Martínez river. In 1865, José Gener, a Spanish émigré from Tarragona, used the name of his plantation to establish the Hoyo de Monterrey brand, which has since become synonymous with quality.
