Hoyo de Monterrey traces its origins to the town of San Juan y Martínez, located in the heart of Cuba’s legendary Vuelta Abajo region. The plantation is accessed through a gate on the town’s main square, which bears the inscription “Hoyo de Monterrey. Jose Gener. 1860.”

The term “Hoyo”, meaning “hole”, refers to the plantation’s low-lying position beside the fertile banks of the San Juan y Martínez river. In 1865, José Gener, a Spanish immigrant from Tarragona, used the name of his plantation to launch what would become one of Cuba’s most respected cigar brands.
