Hoyo de Monterrey finds its origins in the town of San Juan y Martínez, set in the heart of Cuba’s legendary Vuelta Abajo region. This fertile land is home to the Hoyo de Monterrey plantation, recognised as one of the finest Vegas de Primera. Visitors can reach it through a gate in the town’s main square, marked with the inscription “Hoyo de Monterrey. Jose Gener. 1860.”

The name “Hoyo”, meaning “hole”, refers to the plantation’s position in a low-lying area alongside the rich banks of the San Juan y Martínez river. In 1865, José Gener, a Spaniard from Tarragona, named his cigar brand after this very plantation, establishing a legacy of craftsmanship that endures to this day.
