Hoyo de Monterrey traces its heritage to the town of San Juan y Martínez, situated in the heart of Cuba’s prestigious Vuelta Abajo region. It is here that the renowned Hoyo de Monterrey plantation, recognised as one of the exceptional Vegas de Primera, is located. The plantation is accessed through a gate in the town’s main square, marked with the inscription “Hoyo de Monterrey. Jose Gener. 1860.”

The name “Hoyo”, meaning “hole”, reflects the plantation’s low-lying position on the fertile banks of the San Juan y Martínez river. José Gener, a Spanish émigré from Tarragona, established the Hoyo de Monterrey brand in 1865, drawing on the rich character of his vega to produce a distinguished line of Habanos.

This cigar is known for its subtlety and aromatic complexity. The blend offers a refined experience that is lighter on the palate, making it particularly appealing to those who appreciate elegance and finesse in a milder Habano.

In 2005, Hoyo de Monterrey became the first brand to launch the Petit Robusto format. With a substantial 50 ring gauge and a shorter length, it is ideal for those who enjoy the feel of a thicker cigar but prefer a more concise smoking experience.
