Hoyo de Monterrey originates from the town of San Juan y Martínez, nestled in the heart of Cuba’s renowned Vuelta Abajo region. This area is home to the esteemed Hoyo de Monterrey plantation, recognised as one of the great Vegas de Primera. The entrance to the plantation is found through a gate on the town’s main square, bearing the inscription “Hoyo de Monterrey. Jose Gener. 1860.”
The name “Hoyo”, meaning “hole”, refers to the plantation’s low-lying position on the fertile banks of the San Juan y Martínez river. It was in 1865 that José Gener, a Spaniard from Tarragona, first used the name of his vega to create a brand of Habanos, marking the beginning of this celebrated cigar line.
Renowned for its refined character, the flavour of Hoyo de Monterrey cigars appeals to those who favour a lighter yet aromatic smoke, distinguished by elegance and complexity. This unique blend has earned a loyal following among connoisseurs seeking sophistication in a more delicate format.
In 2005, Hoyo de Monterrey pioneered the introduction of the Petit Robusto, a shorter format with a 50 ring gauge. This vitola caters to those who appreciate the feel of a thicker cigar but require a shorter smoking experience.
