Hoyo de Monterrey originates from the town of San Juan y Martínez, located in the heart of Cuba's renowned Vuelta Abajo region. The Hoyo de Monterrey plantation, one of the finest Vegas de Primera, is accessed via a gate on the town's main square, which reads "Hoyo de Monterrey. Jose Gener. 1960."

The name "Hoyo," meaning "hole," refers to the plantation's low-lying position along the fertile banks of the San Juan y Martínez river. In 1865, José Gener, a Spaniard from Tarragona, first used the name of his vega to create a brand of Habanos, and it has since become a symbol of quality and tradition.
