Hoyo de Monterrey originates from the town of San Juan y Martínez, located in the heart of Cuba’s revered Vuelta Abajo region. This area is home to the Hoyo de Monterrey plantation, one of the distinguished Vegas de Primera. The plantation is accessed through a gate in the town’s main square, inscribed with the words “Hoyo de Monterrey. Jose Gener. 1860.”

The name “Hoyo”, meaning “hole”, refers to the plantation’s low-lying position along the fertile banks of the San Juan y Martínez river. In 1865, José Gener, a Spaniard from Tarragona, used the name of his plantation to establish what would become one of Cuba’s most respected cigar brands.
