Hoyo de Monterrey takes its name from the town of San Juan y Martínez, located in the heart of Cuba’s esteemed Vuelta Abajo region. This area is home to the Hoyo de Monterrey plantation, regarded as one of the great Vegas de Primera. The plantation is accessed through a gate in the town’s main square, bearing the inscription “Hoyo de Monterrey. Jose Gener. 1860.”

The term “Hoyo”, meaning “hole”, refers to the plantation’s low-lying position on the fertile banks of the San Juan y Martínez river. It was in 1865 that José Gener, a Spanish émigré from Tarragona, first used the name of his plantation to create what would become one of Cuba’s most refined cigar brands.
